Overtime Calculator [2026]
Calculate your time-and-a-half (1.5x) and double-time (2.0x) overtime pay, total gross paycheck, and effective blended hourly rate under federal FLSA and California labor standards across weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly payrolls.
How FLSA Overtime & Time-and-a-Half Are Calculated
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per workweek at a rate not less than one and one-half times (1.5x) their regular rate of pay. In states like California, daily overtime applies after 8 hours per day, and double-time (2.0x) applies after 12 hours.
Standard 40 hours per workweek at your contractual straight hourly rate.
Hours worked beyond 40 per week (or 8 per day in CA) earn $1.50 per $1.00 base.
Mandated in California after 12 daily hours, or negotiated via union CBAs.

Step-by-Step FLSA Overtime Formulas
The exact mathematical methodology used by payroll departments to process non-exempt paychecks.
Under federal law, regular hours are capped at 40 hours in a 7-day workweek. Any non-exempt hours up to 40 are paid at the contractual base rate. For example, 40 hours at $30.00/hour = $1,200.00.
Hours worked past 40 in a workweek are multiplied by 1.5 times your regular rate. If your base wage is $30.00, your overtime rate is $45.00/hour ($30.00 × 1.5). Five overtime hours equals $225.00.
Applicable in California for hours worked beyond 12 in a single day, or past 8 hours on the 7th consecutive day. At $30.00/hour, the double-time rate is $60.00/hour ($30.00 × 2.0).
Dividing total paycheck gross by all hours logged reveals your true average hourly earnings. For a 45-hour week earning $1,425.00 gross, the blended rate is $1,425 ÷ 45 = $31.67/hour.
